Exam Preparation

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore course is for experienced sailors seeking to skipper yachts on long offshore passages. It focuses on advanced skills for handling a yacht in all conditions, including night passages and demanding weather.

 

This is an exam preparation course that culminates in an exam with an independent RYA examiner, assessing navigation, seamanship, and boat handling.

Who is the Course For?

Ideal for experienced sailors with significant sea miles wanting to demonstrate competence in offshore skippering. Suited for those advancing their sailing career, pursuing commercial endorsements, or undertaking serious yachting challenges.

Course Content

  • Advanced Navigation and Pilotage
    Offshore navigation, position fixing, dead reckoning, and course plotting using traditional and electronic charts.

  • Offshore Passage Planning
    Plan longer passages, considering weather, sea conditions, and passage timings.

  • Heavy Weather Sailing
    Manage a yacht in strong winds and heavy seas, including storm tactics and decision-making.

  • Night Sailing and Navigation
    Navigate during night passages, identifying lights and buoys.

  • Crew Management
    Lead and manage a crew during long passages, dealing with fatigue, stress, and emergencies.

  • Safety and Emergency Procedures
    Advanced safety drills, man-overboard recovery in rough seas, and handling breakdowns or injuries.

Duration

10 days of training, followed by a 1-2 day Yachtmaster Offshore exam.

Pre-course experience

  • 50 days at sea (5 as skipper), 2,500 nautical miles, 5 passages over 60 miles (2 as skipper), and 2 overnight passages.

  • Offshore navigation and meteorology knowledge recommended.

  • First Aid Certificate and VHF Radio License required.

Minimum age

18 years old.

Successful candidates receive the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore certificate, qualifying them to skipper 200gt sailing yachts up to 24 meters on offshore passages. The certificate can be commercially endorsed, opening doors to a range of professional roles in the marine industry.
